A brief history of Elsdon Avenue Church

Elsdon Avenue Church first opened on the 18th April 1964. It was built to replace the old Presbyterian Church (now occupied by Ivanhoe Forge).

In 1972 Reverend David Watson the minister for Seaton Delaval Methodist Church and the Reverend Don Dennison of Elsdon Avenue Church started to plan the amalgamation of their two congregations. Subsequently there was an overlap of ministers from both churches during 1973 with the intention that the Methodist congregation would come to Elsdon Avenue.

At approximately the same time, the United Reformed Church in England was formed on the 5th October 1972 through the union of the Presbyterian Church and the Congregational Church.

On Sunday 28th April 1974 the last service was held at Seaton Delaval Methodist Church and on the 1st May 1974 Elsdon Avenue Church, United Reformed and Methodist was officially formed.

On the 26th February 2023 Seghill Methodist Church sadly closed and its congregation also came to Elsdon Avenue Church.
